Everything but Sleep

Chapters of THE NIGHT

For most people, the night is all about sleep. But what happens when we make do without sleep and stay awake through the night?

Chapters of THE NIGHT

For most people, the night is all about sleep. But what happens when we make do without sleep and stay awake through the night?

Star light, star bright – The night sombre and dark?

In the evening, darkness envelops the earth like a blanket. Gazing up at the night sky creates stories – not just telling of the stars, but also of those observing them. A darkness solely lit by stars stimulates the human imagination, posedsquestions and awakens inquiring minds. This is the trigger to try and understand the night.

Silent night – What emerges in the darkness

Night is a borderline experience, full of fear and fascination. The silence of the night can be oppressive, but also contemplative, festive and romantic. Sleeplessness at night awakens thoughts and feelings, the ‘inner demons’ coped with since time immemorial and which we endow with an external form. The night is thus expressed in art works in painting and music, as well as in the rituals and festivals of light in diverse cultures.

Non-stop – Night-time as the right time for work

Isn’t the night just the dark half of the day which can be filled with work? The development of artificial illumination created new spaces for work and communication. Gradually, the border between day and night dissolved – culminating in a constant global exchange.

Twilight – salons, kerbstones and clubs

The Salon – From diffident to dissolute Culture, entertainment, dancing and excesses. Not only does the night offer additional time to work, but temptations sometimes stronger than the prospect of being well-rested tomorrow. The kerbstone – Night on the streets
When we leave the walls of our own homes, we step out into the public space of the street. The street unifies light and shade. Constraints and a lack of borders facilitate freedom and pleasure just as much as they do hardship and a loss of control. The club – dance venue and free space Thudding basses, tireless masses abandoning themselves to dance and the feeling of unlimited freedom – everything seems possible.
